Alternative Transportation

Rode my bike to work today. Just trying to show that I care about the environment/mother earth/god.

Just trying to make a difference in my community/environment/social group...

When I picked out my bike, I struggled with what type to buy. “Which type will make me seem relevant and alternative, without breaking my parents budget?” I wondered. I saw several options:

1. Mountain Bike

Just cuttin' through the woods on my way to "Into to Macoeconomics"

A mountain bike seemed like a good option. They’re pretty cheap. They have sweet shocks and tons of gears, figure I could do some “sweet jumps” on campus to score points with ladies/prove my superiority over other guys. They’re pretty comfortable. They’re not very alternative though. Seems like every “frat douche” rides one around campus. Not really looking to be lumped in with that class.

2. BMX Bike

...cool...?

A BMX bike was another good option. Not sure what “BMX” stands for. Maybe “bullemix.” Not sure what kind of statement a BMX bike would make about me. They’re small and light, but also seem to be ridden by “little white punks” who wear affliction tees and hats backwards. Not sure if I want to be lumped in that category either.

3. Vintage Cruiser Bike

Vintage and Ironic

A Vintage Cruiser sounded like a good idea. Go to thrift stores, avoid “poor” people and grab a bike. This would be good for several reasons. Definitely different that most people’s bikes. Also, “ironic” since I’m a suburban white kid riding a “piece of shit” but in a cool way. Feel like this is a good way to stamp yourself with an alternative stamp. But, they are “heavy as shit”, and I couldn’t carry my bike into coffee shops/whole foods/urban outfitters to prove how much I love the earth.

4. Fixed Gear Bike

Just another "effing hipster"...

On paper, this sounds like the best option. Light, easy to ride. Won’t break every 18 seconds. Also, super customizable, so I can show my love for “mother earth” in a unique and alternative way. However, it seems like “effing hipsters” have taken over the “fixie” bike scene. If I rode one, I’d probably have to start shopping at Whole Foods, become a Vegan, buy skinny American Apparel jeans and drink PBR, which is shit.

Such a tough decision. Just want to be able to help the earth in a public way, so that everyone will see it.

Are bikes the ultimate alternative transportation?
Are mountain bikes for “frat douches?”
If I ride a fixie will I turn into an “effing hipster?”
Should I just ride the bus?

Scared Abt Life

I’m kind of just realizing that I only have 5 more weeks before I graduate college to become a “real person.” Little nervous, not sure if I’m cut out to be “regular bro” running around balancing budgets and accounting accounts.

My Q2 fiscals went up 2/10ths of a point from last year!

Think a lot of people “give up on their dreams,” and get shitty jobs straight out of college so they can pay the bills and put food on the table for them and their families. Then I think other people don’t quite know when to give up on their dreams, like when people “totally suck” at what they really want to be. (i.e. if you’re fat you’ll never be a model) Maybe I’m more cut out for a chill art job, like just takin photos and selling them on flickr to my family members who support out of pity.

Maybe I should just be a musician and an asshole, just like the guys on the Jersey Shore. They seem like they live a pretty chill life, they just drink, show off their abs, high-five and drink. Think that might not be so bad, plus they’re “hella famous/rich” for basically no reason.

"I'm just riding the chill wave..." -Pauly D.

Maybe I should just go to grad school and prolong my decent into reality by hiding behind the doors of higher education and plunging myself into some good old fashioned American debt.

A brief approximation of my finances should I go to grad school. Scale in single US dollars.

I think maybe I’ll just drop out, not finish college, become a hippie and start a massive drum circle. Yeah…that sounds good…

Just expressing how much I hate mainstream American culture.

New Robyn Track

Robyn will be releasing her third album of 2010. It’s impressive enough if an artist can get two albums out…actually one per year. So this outpour of production from the Swedish-born Robyn is staggering.
Check out the first single from Body Talk, Pt. 3 “Indestructible” incidentally the acoustic track from Body Talk, Pt. 2.

World Cup Hangover

Apparently this summer some event called “The World Cup” happened. Supposedly it’s when every country other than the United States gets together in basically a third world country and plays soccer. The Americans routinely underperfom, because every other country calls soccer “football.” So the American team shows up with their helmets and football.

This team apparently "lost" this summer

Name confusion aside, soccer seems to be a sport that Americans routinely don’t care about for 1,430 days out of every 1,460 days. every 4 years, Americans don their recently bought United States soccer jerseys, paint their faces, wear zany wigs, bang on drums and cheer for a sport they won’t care about in 3 weeks. In a fit of sports amnesia right after the conclusion of the World Cup American’s forget about soccer because Freedom Football stars up, as does basketball, baseball and hockey, all sports that represent America’s desire to do things no other country does.

Is Freedom Football the "True American Sport?"

Wonder what would happen if the U.S. won the World Cup one time. We apparently had it here in the early 90s when some South Americans “beat the shit” out of the rest of the world and won. If we won, maybe American’s would abandon sports that the other countries don’t understand and pick up “the world’s game”

South Americans are good at soccer because they have no "McDonalds beer guts"

Wonder if this is a hangover from our “colonial” days when England still “owned” us. Since the English love soccer, we automatically had to invent 5 sports they have never heard of and call them “America’s game” and exclude all other countries from participating.

Did you root for the United States at the World Cup?
Did you already forget what “soccer” is?
Were you more psyched for “Freedom Football?”
Do they let dog fighters participate in soccer? (via Philly Vick)

October Blues

It’s now October. Where does the time go? It feels like just last week I was toasting champagne over the 2010 changeover. It’s almost time for 2011, and that means we’re a little bit closer to 2012 and the end of the world. At least it will make for some bomb-ass parties. No sense holding back if we’re all going to wake up dead.

Kinda nervous about the end of the world. Since I don’t really believe in Heaven/chilling with God/Jesus-bro when you die, I’m not really looking forward to dying

Are you going to "chill" with God/Jesus-bro after the zombie apocalypse?

Anyway, this brings me back to October. Even though we’re on the edge of an apocalypse, October is my favorite month of the year. First of all, Halloween. Halloween is the best holiday of the year. You get to dress up and scare little kids, drink a ton and eat candy for no reason other than it’s fun.

What are you thinking of going as for Halloween this year, since it’s costume picking season? I’m think about a Shark. Because Sharks are king of the sea.

Kind of like the Sufer Blood bros...

Also reminds me of the Surfer Blood bro’s album cover, incidentally one of my favorite releases of 2k9.

Is Candy Corn the “alt” candy or just “shit?”
Is Halloween the ultimate holiday?
What are you going to be for Halloween?
Is a shark a sweet costume or “mega-lame?”
Which one of your bros is going to throw the best slammin’ Halloween party this year?
It won’t be me.

Enjoy Fall
Enjoy Candy
Enjoy Halloween

R.I.P Radio

I have spent the last few days in a loaner dealership car since mine has been in the shop. This means I’ve had a good few days stuck listening to terrestrial radio as my loaner has no iPod hookups. This has lead me to a conclusion.

Terrestrial Radio is dead

Every radio station is Top 40, Country, Rap or Latin. I don’t understand how so much of the same stuff can co-exist simultaneously. Sometimes it’s lonely being the only Indie music show on terrestrial radio.
This whole thing kind of makes me want to quit. Kind of feels like I’m fighting a battle that I have been destined to lose from the beginning. Not sure if I’m up to it anymore. Popular music is no longer defined by what is heard on the radio, DJs are no longer given freedom to play new music. DJs are locked into computer-run programs that have 10 song libraries that play on repeat. Program Directors respond to what is on MTV and the Disney Channel. It’s been a good run terrestrial radio, but I believe I can pronounce it, you are dead.

Is Terrestrial Radio dead?
Is The Cassette Deck the only good show on the radio?
Should I just give up and quit radio altogether?
Do you like Top 40 stations because they play “hip” music?
Can you relate to the DJs on Top 40 stations? Are they “just like you?”
Is the Volkswagon Tiguan a relevant car or a “mom mobile?”
Should this be my last blog post ever?

September 13th Madness

Fall is an exciting time for me. Temperatures here in Texas drop below 100, trees turn from green to dead overnight and it’s bitterly cold without the hope of precipitation that will cancel my classes. I’m still glad it’s here. The sports bro in me comes out a bit as Soccer seasons start up all over the world. It’s back to work for Liverpool who were embarrassingly bad last season and have continued that to the beginning of this season.
Fall also means that it’s time to start considering the end of the year 2010. How has this year stacked up? I’m not sure yet. Plenty of good music came out, giving me plenty of headaches about my annual end-o-the-year list, but that was about it. I feel like the world is slowly unraveling and we’re all stuck on it.
We’ll see, I’m not religious but maybe 2012 will mark the end of the world. We won’t know until roughly a year a a few months. Why worry now?
Cheers,

Kyle
